The Texas Youth Hunting Program was established to increase the number of youth participating in wildlife and hunting activities.  The Authority began participating in 2006. Over 50 youth participants have harvested doe, spikes, hogs, and other wildlife.  Lavaca-Navidad River Authority offers 2 youth hunts per year, typically in October and January, and is open to the youth of Jackson, Lavaca, and Wharton Counties.  If you are interested in participating, please contact our Texas Youth Hunting Program representatives, Harry and Shirley O’Dell, at 361-782-8730 or visit the Texas Youth Hunting Program website.

Each year, 5-10 youth are chosen to hunt on LNRA project lands.  The youth must complete a hunter safety course and be supervised at a shooting range for safety purposes.  They must also carry a current Texas Parks and Wildlife hunting license.  After the harvest of an animal, the youth participates in processing the animal and takes the animal home.

The weekend begins on Friday evening with everyone arriving and getting set up at camp.  The hunts take place on Saturday morning, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning.  In between hunts, presentations and trainings are provided on some aspect of hunting.  All meals are provided and anyone participating must camp onsite for the duration of the weekend.
